As children we learn to protect ourselves by hiding behind barriers like furniture or mother’s skirt if we felt “threatened.”
Gradually instead of hiding behind objects we learn to fold our arms tightly across our chests, whenever we feel in danger, uncomfortable or nervous.
Ever noticed someone pulling their collar shirt when under pressure? You could say they were “getting hot under the collar”. Well, this is because it’s true!
There are many ways to tell if someone is relaxed around you, and we are going to look at how a person in a suit or coat buttoned up would act if they were relaxed in your company.
Overview
A significant number of body movements used together (known as a cluster), is a sign of fear and readiness to give in.
This is most commonly seen in animals, where fighting (that could potentially kill one another) is avoided by the animals showing displays of anger like aggression (roaring etc) or submission.
Women use most of the same preening gestures as men (see here) like smoothing their hair, straightening their clothes, foot and body pointing towards the male they are interested in. They can also demonstrate the hands in pockets with thumbs protruding gesture although they are much more subtle typically a thumb on their belt, or protruding from their handbag.
Ever noticed someone covering their mouth either when they are talking or you are? They may cover the whole mouth or use a fist, or only a few fingers but essentially it all means the same thing - they are lying!
Evaluation of what you have to say/offer is typically shown by a closed hand on the cheek often with a finger pointed up.
Just like folded arms position, crossed legs can demonstrate that a negative attitude may exist. However crossed arms do indicate a more negative attitude than do crossed legs. Additionally the crossed arms gesture is more obvious.
So what is behind someone rubbing their eye whilst talking with you?
The theory is that the brain is attempting to block out the person’s deceit, lie or doubt that it is seeing or indeed avoiding having to look at the person to whom they are lying to.
